I tried to tell someone....but no one listened!

Theme 4: Engaging our Students

Brief outline:

Using active listening to ensure you hear what students and colleagues say and provide more effective support without becoming overwhelmed with information.

Good student support is paramount to student retention, transition and success and good student support requires effective communication between students and staff. How often do we really hear what our students are telling us?  How often do we send them away because we are unsure how to respond to their difficulties, do not have time to listen, or do not want to listen?  How many students leave University unnecessarily as no one is hearing what they are saying and ensuring they receive appropriate support?

Good communication involves active listening, reading non verbal messages, and knowing when to refer and whom to refer to!  This session will give attendees the opportunity to explore verbal and non verbal communication, and see for themselves how effective active listening really is, and to consider the importance of active self care for staff when they are supporting students.
