Data Protection Act 1998 & Freedom of Information Act 2000

An essential workshop designed for any member of staff

Brief outline:

This session includes an introduction to both Acts and their implications for the University.  Participants will have opportunities to consider and discuss ways in which these laws are relevant to a wide variety of routine University tasks.

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 aims to promote greater openness and public sector accountability.  Members of staff need to be aware of the publication scheme and appreciate the day-to-day implications.

What you can expect to learn:

  • Awareness of the legal context and our duties as a public authority
  • Understanding key terms
  • Awareness of key provisions and their implications for your work
  • Significance of records and dealing with a subject access or FOI request
  • Your responsibility in ensuring the University complies with this legislation.
