NRA Strategies

Strategies for the resolution of outstanding unallocated teaching activities

Following the termly publication of the teaching timetable to OnTime, the Timetabling & Rooming Office will issue department nominated users with a series of spreadsheets listing those requested teaching activities for which no room is available (NRA)

This marks the commencement of the NRA (no room available) phase, where the Timetabling & Rooming Office seeks to explore any flexibility which exists in relation to these outstanding requests.

An NRA arises when the demand for a particular timetable slot exceeds the supply of available rooms.

Below are listed some of the strategies for resolving NRAs which will underpin ongoing negotiations.  This list is indicative and does not exhaust the range of creative solutions which can result from an effective collaboration over this important area of University business.

Rescheduling (day/time/duration)
Review departmental use of the 5pm to 7pm slot
Review non-standard start times
Review week-by-week specialist requirements
Explore alternative delivery modes
Insert lunch breaks/split activities
Cancellation of reading week/contingency booking/overbooking
Ongoing review of requirements
"Wait and see"
External venues
Re-establish minimum requirements

Whilst the Timetabling & Rooming Office does not consider cancellation to be a ‘strategy’ for resolving NRAs, it is a possible outcome should all other options be exhausted.

The Office is always grateful for the efforts of departmental and faculty colleagues in meeting the challenges of allocating finite resources in support of the student experience.
