European Diploma Supplement

Your Qualification in Europe

Your award from the University, whether it is a certificate, a diploma, or a degree, will be recognised and valued throughout the world. However, the countries of Europe have agreed a common system that will allow your award to be readily understood and recognised in relation to those from other universities across the whole European region.

This system consists of two parts:

European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)

As you are already aware, each module of study that you take is valued at a certain number of credits. The number of credits indicates the size of the module in terms of academic content and your learning load. For example many modules in the programmes of the University are 20 credits. A common tariff of credits has been agreed across the European region; these are called ECTS credits. To calculate the ECTS credits for a module, you should divide the Canterbury Christ Church University credits by 2. So a 20 credit module is valued at 10 ECTS credits.

The Diploma Supplement

You are entitled to receive a European Diploma Supplement that gives more information about your award to European employers and universities. The word ‘Diploma’ in the name of the document is misleading; Diploma Supplements may be obtained for every award that the University makes, including certificates and degrees.

The document gives additional information about your award over and above what is given on your transcript of marks and your award certificate. For instance, it describes the Higher Education system in England and Wales. Diploma Supplements do not record Christ Church credits (which are shown on your transcript of marks) but show the ECTS credits for each module.
