Tax and NI

None of us like it, but unfortunately most of us have to pay it!

We have listed some frequently asked questions which you may find useful. Alternatively you can always contact HM Revenue and Customs direct.

There are a few ways you can reduce the amount of Tax and NI you pay.

  • Join one of our pension schemes - pension contributions are tax free and you will pay a lower rate of NI if you are in a final salary pension scheme.
  • Claim child care vouchers - if you are eligible to claim child care vouchers from  Computershare they are tax and NI exempt up to £243 per month (2009/10).
  • Cycle To Work Scheme - payments made under the Cycle To Work Scheme are are deducted from your pay before tax and NI are calculated. For details of the scheme click here.
  • Payroll Giving - Also known as Give As You Earn. Donations are free of tax, further information is available here.
  • By virtue of age - if you are over 65 (men) you no longer have to pay NI contributions, women may be aged between 60 and 65 before they are exempt. You should apply to HM Revenue and Customs for a Certificate of Age Exception and send it in to the Payroll Office as soon as possible. If you are over 65 you may also be entitled to higher Tax allowances, if so, make sure that Revenue and Customs have given them to you!
