Justice of the Peace Release
The policy regarding the release of staff to serve as Magistrates is as follows:
- Agreement to release staff for such duties will normally be given but only after consideration of departmental needs and any question of "cover"
- For all cases, the University will support the staff member for the minimum level of duties (currently 26 half days per annum, as we understand it): members of staff are not expected to commit more than that without further discussion with the relevant Head of Department/Section and Senior Management Team member
- For academic staff, the time allocated will be a 6% of 550 hours (33 hours) reduction in teaching load. For non-academic staff, the time allowed will be 26 half days. (In both cases, the time is approximately equivalent to 100 hours)
- In all cases, the time allowed will be with pay.
Any member of staff hoping to become a Justice of the Peace should first consult their Head of Department/Section, who should also ensure that the relevant member of the Senior Management Team is informed.
