Academic Sessional staff - rates of pay

Sessional Rates of Pay following implementation of VT2000

Sessional rates of pay are centrally administered and controlled. The University has a number of agreed hourly rates of pay based on the Pay Framework agreement. These rates are paid as a multiple of the a basic hourly rates (see "Multiplier") and are incremental based on on years of continuous service (see incremental progression).

VT2000 also allows schedules for work to be agreed for a number of other activities such as training and development rates, marking and attending interviews subject to certain conditions. Details of these are on the rates summary.

Other faculty or specialist delivery rates will be available to local administrators subject to confirmation with Human Resources.

The “Multiplier”

In line with the national pay guidelines for hourly paid staff (JNCHES) hourly paid staff’s hourly rate in enhanced by a “multiplier”. This multiplier is applied in recognition of preparation time before the taught hours and work done after the taught hour and includes a defined element for compensation for accrued annual leave.  For Sessional Instructors this multiplier is 2 times the base hourly rate of paid, for Sessional Academic staffing (FE and HE) this is 2.5 times the base hourly rate.

Pay Point on Appointment to Sessional working

All new appointment to the hourly rates will be appointed to the lowest of these three pay points.

Incremental Progression

Progression to the net pay spine is subject to the member of staff undertaking no less than 110 hours of teaching within the academic year (1 August to 31 July). If less than 110 hours are worked then payment will continue at the same spine point for the following year. Increments are permanent and will not be lost except where there has been a break in continuous service.

Sick Pay

The University has agreed a framework and procedure for sessional staff to claim sick pay. Sessional sick pay will be subject to service and paid at the basic hourly rate. Full details of the sick pay scheme are available from the links below as is the sessional sick pay claim form.
