Health and Safety Policy Statement

1. POLICY STATEMENT

1.1. This is the statement of policy by Canterbury Christ Church University relating to its intentions, organisation and arrangements for ensuring the health and safety at work of its employees, the promotion of a healthy and safe learning environment for its students, and the physical safety of visitors and contractors whilst on University premises.

1.2. The University is committed to ensuring a positive and proactive health and safety culture that will bring about safe working practices in all University activities: academic, administrative, support and commercial.

2. STATEMENT OF INTENT

2.1. It is the policy of the Governing Body of the University to ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of its employees whilst at work and of others affected by University activities, and to comply with the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and other relevant legislation.

3. OBJECTIVES

In order to achieve compliance with the statement of policy, the University has set the following objectives:

3.1 To maintain high standards for health, safety and a safe working and learning environment throughout the University.

3.2 To support and develop the management structure to implement and maintain this Policy Statement, which includes professional support for health and safety, including fire safety.

3.3 To make all employees aware of their statutory responsibility to ensure their own safety, the safety of their colleagues and their responsibility to their employer to work safely.

3.4 To draw to attention of students the importance of health, fire and safety matters, particularly in relation to student accommodation.

3.5 To develop the means for the identification of risks, and the implementation of actions and controls to remove or reduce the risks to an acceptable level, in accordance with the risk management strategy.

3.6 To provide safe access and egress to the University for employees, students, visitors and contractors and to provide a safe working environment for employees by establishing and implementing safe systems of work, including a health and safety management system.

3.7 To provide adequate resources to ensure that proper and adequate provision can be made for the implementation of health and safety policy and associated procedures.

3.8 To provide all employees with such information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to secure their safety and health at work and the safety of others who may be affected by their actions.

3.9 To provide students with such information and instruction as is necessary to enable them to contribute to the safety culture of the University.

3.10 To ensure that the arrangements for the use, handling, storage and transport of articles and substances for their use at work will be safe and with minimal risk to health.

3.11 To provide a safe working environment for all employees and learning environment for all students, with minimal risk to health.

3.12 To make adequate provision with regard to the facilities and arrangements for their welfare at work.

3.13 To ensure adequate provision that complies with the requirements of current Disability Discrimination legislation, so far as is reasonably practicable.

3.14 To undertake monitoring programmes and keep records that demonstrate the University’s commitment to maintaining agreed minimum standards of the health, safety and welfare of employees and the safety of others who may be affected by their actions.

3.15 To provide, where appropriate, health surveillance for employees.

3.16 To ensure that the provision and maintenance of all plant, machinery and equipment is safe, with minimal risk to health.

3.17 To monitor and review annually the effectiveness of this statement, and to maintain or improve as appropriate to ensure compliance with University policy and procedure and all current legislation.
