Don Cross was appointed Health and Safety Advisor to the University with effect from 12th January 2004. Don is from a Marine Engineering background having served in the Royal Navy (Submarine Service) for 25 years. During this time, he sub-specialised in submarine safety including exit and re-entry techniques. Since leaving the Royal Navy in 1989, he has been responsible for engineering and maintenance at Port Ramsgate and at the Q.E.Q.M Hospital, Margate and most recently for the private BMI Hospital group where his role was that of Chief Engineer and Health and Safety Officer. Health and Safety has taken on a new dimension in recent years with the emphasis being focussed on self regulation and to this end, Don has undertaken a wide ranging review of all Health and Safety documentation including the University Health and Safety Policy document and individual policies and procedures. The most recent significant challenge for the Health and Safety Department was the input into the Augustine House project. Future challenges include the St Georges Place accommodation project whilst maintaining the all important day to day health and safety requirements of the University. Lloyd Morgan was appointed as University Fire Safety Advisor in October 2009 and is a member of the University Solicitors Office. Prior to taking up his post Lloyd was a serving Fire Officer in the Essex County Fire & Rescue Service where he served for 31 years. He held a variety of posts and was Assistant Divisional Officer in charge of community and technical fire safety for the Basildon & Castle Point Community Command at the time of his retirement. The role of the University fire safety advisor is to carry out statutory fire risk assessments on University properties, give fire safety advice to students and all levels of the organisation, create appropriate policies and procedures and ensure that the University environment is safe for all users. To educate and inform students and all staff members so that their safety is not compromised is the most important aspect of the fire safety advisor's role and Canterbury Christ Church University is committed to delivering a quality service to all.
