Evacuation of Disabled Persons

Page currently under review, if you have any queries, please direct them to health.safety@canterbury.ac.uk

The safe evacuation of disabled staff, students and visitors is the responsibility of the University.  Safe evacuation procedures must be pre-planned, identify the needs of disabled persons, and make proper arrangements for their assistance.

A review of the arrangements for the evacuation from each building should form an integral part of the assessment for each disabled member of staff, student and visitor. The purpose is to ensure that arrangements for evacuation complement those for access.

The record of the arrangements for personal evacuation will be a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP). A PEEP should be produced with the active participation of the affected person.

Written instructions and, where necessary, training, are essential in ensuring a PEEP is followed and that relevant members of staff and students are aware of its existence.

The University needs to anticipate that staff, students, and visitors make use of general facilities, such as the catering, library, computing, recreational and social facilities and have appropriate plans to evacuate any individual with disabilities from such areas.

The University recognises it is not feasible to take account of particular management or operational arrangements. Heads of department may develop departmental arrangements and procedures, including lines of communication and recording arrangements, to facilitate the process of evacuation.

To support the implementation of this Overall Statement, the University has agreed General Guidance.

In addition, there is Guidance on the Preparation of PEEPs, Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) Guidance.
