Fire Alarms
The maintenance schedule for building fire alarm systems follows the guidance provided in the latest edition of BS 5839, Part 1 – Detection and Alarm Systems for Buildings. Code of practice for system design, installation and servicing.
In addition to the quarterly servicing of fire alarm systems, there is a requirement for a functional test to be carried out each week and recorded in the Fire Alarm Log Book. The weekly test is carried out by the Estates Department. Weekly tests are not undertaken during weeks when quarterly service visits are undertaken.
This test will normally mean that the alarm will sound for approximately 10 to 15 seconds each week on the day and between the times shown on the schedule.
NOTE: AN ALARM SOUNDING FOR ANY LONGER THAN 20 – 30 SECONDS MUST BE TREATED AS A FULL FIRE ALARM ACTIVATION AND YOU SHOULD EVACUATE THE BUILDING IMMEDIATELY.
