Important Notice - Due to refurbishment work within the Laud building over the summer the Off Air recording facility will be unavailable between Monday 20th June and Friday 2nd September.
Please note that no programmes will be captured during this period.
The copying of DVD's and the transfer of VHS tapes to DVD will also be unavailable during this period.
User Technology is a dedicated team of Development and Support technicians within Computing Services assisting both staff and students alike in with Computing and Audio Visual equipment. User Technology's aim is to support the teaching process, enhance the student experience and help students achieve their learning outcomes.
The equipment loan service for staff and students at the University; where digital cameras, camcorders, Dictaphones and other equipment may be borrowed on short-term loan to assist them with their studies; is now available in Augustine House as a Library loan on a "first come, first served" basis.
We also provide and maintain all User Technology equipment in lecture rooms and lecture theatres and occasionally provide specialist equipment for use with specific lectures. Staff should log a Support Call with the i-zone giving us as much notice as possible (at least 5 working days), if they have a specific requirement for a lecture; stating the date, start and end time together with the room number. We are unable to guarantee equipment availability at short notice as the equipment may already have been booked.
The Off-Air Recording service offered by the UT operates under the ERA and Open University licensing schemes; recording broadcast programmes for staff and the Library. Please make requests for Off-Air recordings by logging a Support Call with the i-zone. No recordings will be made without the full information required, including financial Cost Centre details for recharge purposes.
From August 1st 2009 staff and students have been able to access to the BoB (Box of Broadcasts) service, provided by the British Universities Film and Video Council, where staff and students can request a maximum of three recordings per day, kept indefinitely. It also provides users with the ability to edit their selection for streaming during lectures, or embedding into PowerPoint presentations, etc. This is a streaming service provided in collaboration with the BUFVC and not operated by the University. It is therefore offered unsupported by Computing Services UT team. Questions relating to this service should therefore be made directly to the BUFVC.
Note: Programmes not available from the Off-Air service will be available from the BUFVC at a cost of approximately £1/minute of air time; i.e. a 1-hour programme will cost approximately £60. This can be arranged through the Library.
User Technology do not provide an in-house photographic service. Digital cameras are available for loan to staff in order to produce your own group photos, portrait photos and to take general events around the University. Dependant upon the exact nature of the task User Technology may be able to edit photographs saved as computer files. Such requests must be made as a Support Call via the i-zone.
User Technology also provide computing and data projector facilities on loan for teaching room use, but only where the facility doesn't already exist and it is booked as a Support Call with the i-zone giving 10 day's notice. Computing Services have provided loan laptops and data projectors to most Faculties as a matter of course. If you wish to borrow a laptop computer or data projector you should contact your Faculty Administrator.
Please note: Use ONLY DRY-WIPE PENS on whiteboards. Using an indelible marker pen causes permanent damage to whiteboards and require the costly replacement of projection screens.
User Technology do not supply Dry-Wipe pens; these are
available for purchase direct from Office Depot via your Faculty
Administrator.
