Janet Roaming Service

Following our participation in the Location Independent Networking (LIN) pilot project initiated by UKERNA, Canterbury Christ Church is now a fully participating member institution in the Janet Roaming Service (JRS).

The JRS allows a roaming user (staff or student) from a participating institute to gain access to network resources within a visiting institute. The roaming user will use their credentials [username@realm] to log in, this request will then be redirected to their home institute for authentication, and if successful the user will then be granted access to the network resources that are offered at the visiting institute.

Full details of the JRS are available on the UKERNA Janet Roaming Home Page.

Local Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)

All users of the JRS service should read the Janet Roaming Service User Guide, produced by UKERNA and must comply with the JRS AUP set out in this document and reproduced below:

  1. Be aware of your home site AUP and understand that it applies equally when you are visiting another JRS-enabled site.

  2. Undertake to read the overall JANET Roaming Service policy document before using the service, at:
    UKERNA Janet Roaming Policy

  3. Undertake to read the visited site’s AUP before you start to use their network, and to abide by it.

  4. Stop immediately if you are told that you are breaking any of these policies.

In particular, users should note that this policy imposes the following specific requirements:

  1. Users are responsible to their sites (and legally) for all use of their credentials and any activities undertaken with the authority of those credentials. In particular, users must not allow their own credentials, or network access authenticated by them, to be used by others. If credentials may have been compromised the user must report this to their home site;

  2. Users must abide by restrictions applied by the home site and by JANET, including Acceptable Use Policies, Computing Regulations and Disciplinary Codes. Restrictions imposed by the visited site must also be respected. Where Regulations differ, the more restrictive applies;

  3. Users must endeavour to ensure that they are connected to a genuine JRS roaming service providing adequate security before entering their login credentials;

  4. Users must act immediately on requests by authorised staff of visited or home organisation that relate to their use of the JRS service.

JRS for Visitors to Canterbury Christ Church University

JRS at Canterbury Christ Church University is based on a wireless service, providing web access to the internet (and other access as detailed in JRS Technical Specifications). The service conforms to the Tier 2 of the JRS specification.

The JRS service is available for connection at several locations on the main North Holmes campus, as detailed on the locations page.  All wireless zones listed will accept connections from JRS visitors.

JRS for Canterbury Christ Church University members at Other Institutions

Members of the University visiting other participating institutions that support Tier 2 of the JRS specification should be able to connect to the internet using their Canterbury Christ Church University username.

There are now well over 50 institutes that are participating in offering the JRS service throughout the UK. A full list of those participating can be found here.

Local Users who are intending on visiting other institutes offering the JRS service should view that institute's webpage for JRS to identify what services they are offering and ensure that you know how to connect before your visit. The visited site's Help Desk is under no obligation to assist JRS users. You must also ensure you are using the correct credentials e.g. username@canterbury.ac.uk.

(NB: this is NOT the same as your email address; as an example, a user with the name of Alpha Betty Case would have an email address of a.b.case@canterbury and a username of abc1;  thus to use JRS they would enter abc1@canterbury.ac.uk.)
