Preparing for Vista and Office 2007

The rollout of Vista and Office 2007 commenced in July 2008 and is planned to complete in April 2009.  The upgrades are being carried out on a department by department basis to ensure minimum disruption.

Staff Migration Process

The Vista Administration Officer will contact you by email to ask you to complete and return a VISTA Upgrade Form. Once your form has been returned to the Upgrade Administrator you will be contacted by a member of the User Support Team to arrange a time with you when it is convenient for them to upgrade your machine. The upgrade should take between 2-3 hours.

Please be aware - when Vista is deployed to all machines, any data stored on the local C drive of the machine will be lost. This includes any files stored in the Temp folder or anywhere else on the C drive and any PST ( email archive files ) that you have created.

The deployment of Vista will also remove any additional software which has been installed on the machine either by the user or by Computing Services on behalf of the user. This will not affect the Universities standard software which is listed here

It is crucial that all staff take the following steps in preparation for their Vista upgrade:

• Move or delete any personal files and any PST (email archive files) stored on the local C drive .  PST files should be saved to your N drive or on CD's as a temporary measure.  The creation of PST files is not encouraged by the University.  The policy relating to email and PST files can be found in the following link http://www.canterbury.ac.uk/support/learning-teaching-enhancement-unit/training/email-projects/managing-email/email-project-guidance-note-v1-0.pdf

Please remember that all University related data should be stored on your N drive or a departmental share.

• Make a note of any personal or specialist software installed on your machine so that this can be reinstalled if appropriate after the machine has been upgraded to Vista. The installation disks or the software source will be required. You will be asked to record your software on the Vista Upgrade Checklist which will be provided just prior to the upgrade.

NB. Please continue to log off at the end of each day as normal, but do not switch off the PC

Priority can be given to staff with a strong business case for upgrading e.g. those staff who are working closely with students (Student Labs were upgraded Summer 2008) and those staff who need Vista and Office 2007 for operational reasons. An outline schedule can be found here. If you have any concerns about the timing please discuss this with a member of the VISTA Upgrade team on ext 3291

Please attend one of the Induction sessions being run by LTEU and use the online user guides and tutorials - see the LTEU web pages for more details

If you have any questions about this - please contact the VISTA Upgrade Team on Ext 3291 or email vista-upgrade@canterbury.ac.uk
