
The Infrastructure Group is managed by the Infrastructure
Manager – David Hayling, and is responsible for the
provision of academic and administrative central systems and the
network as required by the University. There are currently 200+
central systems comprising Windows 2003 and Red Hat Enterprise
Linux servers in multiple sites. Currently there are over 15,000
staff and students using the service and a further 20,000
distance learners, accessing learning resources over the
Internet. The group also operates the Kentish MAN regional
network, part of JANET that serves all the HE & FE in Kent and
provides backhaul for all Schools traffic in Kent providing
Internet connectivity to some half a million students and staff
Also responsible for: 4500 network outlets, multiple gigabit
resilient network core, 4 campuses, 6 machine rooms,1100 student
ports, 20,000+ user accounts,190+ servers, many terabytes of
data store and backup, wireless, integrated connection to two
external domains, Kent MAN multi gigabit wide area network.
The group is comprised of two
