Subject Knowledge Enhancement

Our Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses are for pre-Initial Teacher Training (ITT) students who need to strengthen their existing subject knowledge before starting ITT and for qualified teachers to enhance their teaching in a secondary subject.

If you are starting School Direct, PGCE, SCITT or Teach First, these courses provide you with the knowledge and confidence needed to prepare you for your future training and meet the Teachers' Standards. The flexible online courses are individually tailored to fit around your experience and other commitments, including live video tutorials with a specialist tutor to support your progression through the online content and tasks. Further information can be found in our course booklet:

Eligibility and funding

  • Pre-ITT: Free for eligible applicants who have accepted a conditional offer of an ITT place where the conditions indicate a SKE course must be completed. The funding is provided by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) and we deal with the funding request directly from your application information. A training bursary is also available for eligible candidates - to find out more read our SKE Bursary Guidance for 2015 .
  • Post-ITT (current serving teachers): Free places must be requested through a group of Teaching School Alliances (TSAs) that have secured the funding for courses this year. The TSA can then commission us to provide the SKE course for teachers wishing to train. For TSA contact details and further information please email us .
  • Fees: We can provide our SKE courses to candidates who can’t secure a free place but would still benefit from completing a course. Please contact us for pricing and further details.
