Academic and English Language Entry Requirements

To join us here you’ll need to fulfil certain criteria.

If you require any additional information, or need advice about any aspect of your application, please contact our International Enquiry Team.

English Requirements

International Foundation Year

We require EU students to have gained an English language qualification equal to IELTS 5.0 overall, with no less than 5.0 in Writing and no less than 4.0 in all other bands, and can consider a variety of qualifications.

Non-EU students are required by the UK Home Office to have taken an "IELTS for UKVI" or "Trinity ISE" test and to have achieved the levels listed above before they can be admitted to an International Foundation Year.

Standard undergraduate programmes require a minimum English level of IELTS 6.0, with no less than 6.0 in Writing and no less than 5.5 in Reading, Speaking and Listening. Some non-standard programmes require IELTS 6.5 overall. We can accept other English language qualifications depending on your status - please contact the enquiry team to find out whether your qualification is acceptable. If you wish to be considered for advanced entry to Year 2 or 3 of an undergraduate degree, our English language requirement will be the same as for a postgraduate application.

For postgraduate entry, you will need a minimum of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, with no less than 6.0 in Writing and no less than 5.5 in Reading, Speaking and Listening. We are able to accept other English qualifications, including Bachelor's and Master's degrees depending upon the country of issue.
Please check with the International Office for further information.

PASSWORD English Testing:

We are able to offer a complimentary (free) English test called PASSWORD for all levels of course for applications from EU nationals. For non-EU nationals, we are able to offer PASSWORD for all courses except the International Foundation Programme. The PASSWORD test can be offered at our UK campus all year, and at selected worldwide destinations on specific dates. Please contact the international admissions team for further information.

The PASSWORD examination is extremely similar in format to the IELTS examination. The test is graded in an identical way to IELTS, and therefore the same entry grades as above apply.
