Marketing

BSc single honours on in combination with another subject Marketing

This Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) accredited Marketing degree has been designed to produce graduates with an advanced understanding of the dynamic role of marketing. It will equip students with appropriate technical skills, practical knowledge and strategic vision to enhance employment opportunities in a traditional and digital marketing environment.

Consumers today are offered a huge range of products and services so organisations are turning to marketing to help interpret customers’ needs and develop techniques to communicate the benefits of these choices. This degree will help students understand how marketing helps an organisation gain competitive advantage and deliver added value to establish a reason why customers choose one business over another. This widespread adoption of marketing means there are numerous opportunities to pursue exciting and varied careers in the marketing profession.

Marketing can be studied as a Single Honours, for students interested in one of the many specialist roles within Marketing, or it can be combined with other Business School subjects, for example, marketing with Accounting, Advertising Management, Entrepreneurship, Human Resource Management or Business Studies, or with subjects from across the University for example Digital Media, Sports Science or English to suit individual career aspirations.

Year 1 follows a common programme of modules to provide a general understanding of the nature of business and marketing so students can appreciate the interconnected role marketing plays in all organisations. Students will also begin developing employability and professional marketing skills and explore career opportunities to make considered choices for options in the following years. In Year 2 students take core courses to explore and research why consumers behave as they do and how they make decisions. This leads to how marketing ideas and plans are generated and implemented in an organisation. Options currently include E-business, Entrepreneurship, Integrated Marketing Communications, Research Methods, Retail Marketing, Copywriting, Digital and Social Media Marketing.

The final year adopts a strategic and international perspective, whilst allowing students to tailor their interests to a particular career. Option modules build on the previous year’s study and include Marketing Culture and Communications, Public Relations Strategy, Retail Strategy, Service Management, Applied Digital Marketing or Individual Study to research a particular marketing related issue.

Students also have the option to undertake a paid placement in Year 3, returning for the final year. The University offers support in CV writing, creating a digital personal brand, interview training and finding work placements.

The CIM is the leading professional body for marketers worldwide and exists to develop the marketing profession, maintain professional standards and improve the skills of marketing practitioners. Canterbury Christ Church University has joined forces with CIM to give our students the opportunity to gain CIM professional qualifications through their Multi Award Pathway (MAP). CIM qualifications are highly sought after by employers, and MAP alongside our own degrees, ensures we are equipping our students with the best opportunities for a successful marketing career.

Students can expect to develop a range of digital, technical and professional skills that can be applied to a range of marketing careers both in-house and for an agency. Previous graduates have found employment in account management, general marketing, e-marketing, market research, digital marketing, content management, fundraising, public relations, internal communication, media planning, advertising planning and social media marketing across a range of businesses in the private, public and voluntary sectors.

The programme is enhanced with guest speakers, visits to professional marketing events and projects involving external clients to gain real insight into current practice and enhance employability. There are opportunities to take a number of professional qualifications from the CIM and professional certificates such as the Google Adwords and Analytics Certificate.
