The digital world is increasingly shaping the ways we think, work, and play. The Digital Media degree helps you to become a creative producer who understands the importance of using images, animations, and words to produce original and striking multimedia projects.

Using industry standard facilities, you will develop a detailed knowledge of digital media tools alongside an understanding of the history and theory of digital media.

You will explore areas including:

  • web design
  • animation, both 2D and 3D
  • digital imaging
  • multimedia production
  • video production

This engaging and stimulating course offers you the opportunity to develop practical skills and knowledge of theoretical aspects of multimedia digital production. Today’s digital media, incorporating computers, the web, video games, digital television, film, smartphones, and so on occupy an increasingly important role in our lives, changing how we live, work, and play. The Digital Media course aims to explore this exciting field, offering you a wide range of opportunities to engage with digital media in creative ways, while also evaluating the critical and theoretical shifts that go hand in hand with these new forms of media production.

The course is based around three areas of study/practice:

  • Web design
  • Moving image production (including 2D and 3D animation, video production, compositing and green screen, and After Effects)
  • Digital Imaging (creating and manipulating still images)

In addition, the course has a focus on enhancing your future employment prospects, with employability skills embedded into each module. There is also a keen international element. In year two you will have the opportunity to undertake a project that involves a trip abroad to one of our international partners. The course is delivered in the specialist facilities of the Canterbury Campus, offering an inspiring backdrop for the study of digital media. The course uses dedicated digital media suites, with professional level hardware and software, supported by dedicated technicians. The course team of research active staff aims to ensure that you achieve your potential.

Using specialist facilities including computer suites to professional video and sound recording equipment, you will study modules in web design, computer animation (2D and 3D), digital imaging, visual communications, digital entrepreneurship, and other digital multimedia production skills including the core theory modules at each level.

Field trips and gallery visits are available to you, along with classes delivered by industry practitioners and visiting artists. You will learn to use professional-standard software applications including Adobe CC, Maya, and a range of other specialist software and hardware. You will be able to book equipment including video cameras, digital SLRs, and sound recording equipment to complete your project work.

Work experience

The course has established contact with new media companies and independent creative professionals in Kent, some of whom are employed to work as visiting lecturers. You will be encouraged to find work placements or internships outside of term time.

The Digital Media course started in 2003, when ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ was released. The film has been used as a case study for discussing the advantages and disadvantages of digital media and representations of new technologies in mainstream cinema.

Other information

Professionals from the creative industries regularly contribute to the course to enhance the student experience. The course arranges field trips, and gallery visits.

Year 1

Introduction to Digital Animation

You will be introduced to the traditional principles of animation. Learning skills with 2D animation software you will create a short animation on a specified theme whilst learning the different processes involved in the production of a short animation.

Introduction to Scripting

This module primarily covers scripting for web sites, and includes technical training for database management and intermediate CSS for layout and design. These are applied to a website you will design and publish.

Visual Communications

You will research examples of best practice and compile a record of findings, before creating a package of products in miniature that represent a creative and technically capable approach to visual communications using digital media technologies.

Introduction to Digital Creative Practice

You will study essential digital multimedia production skills in this module including html and CSS, digital photography, and sound editing.

Creativity and New Media

This module links your theoretical learning and practice together by allowing you to consider theoretical questions in a practical way. You will learn practical skills including video composition and photo manipulation. Your project will involve the creation of a poster and a video which are linked together to produce some augmented reality.

Introduction to Digital Media

In this module you will study the historical developments of theories and concepts that have led to the widespread use of digital media today. In particular you will examine the relationships between analogue and digital media and how this impacts on the control and distribution of information.

Year 2

Core module

Digital Aesthetics

This module introduces a range of critical concepts and approaches to digital aesthetics and creativity. You will study what constitutes a digital aesthetic, and develop understanding of the significance and distinct properties of digital aesthetics through analysis and discussion of contemporary creative practice such as internet art, photography, cinema, and games design.

Web design

Developing the skills gained at Year 1 you will learn about methods for designing and building a responsive website, on a theme negotiated with your tutors.

Digital Imaging

Working with a theme or concept you will learn intermediate to advanced digital imaging editing and compositing skills. This module offers you the chance to refine and develop a specialist knowledge of this aspect of digital media image editing and production.

Digital Multimedia

This module combines a variety of different forms to create a practical answer to a theoretical question. Using Adobe After Effects, you will learn a variety of different techniques including motion graphics to create a moving image product. You have the choice to include photography, animation or video alongside vector graphics and sound to create your project.

Mobile Aesthetics

This module will equip you with the skills to shoot, edit, and exhibit a video production produced in some part on a mobile device. You will be shown effective camera techniques, sound recording, and editing relevant to a mobile production, and have an opportunity to experiment with producing different mobile forms.

You will also be able to make connections between your work and the broader context of contemporary digital mobile video productions by analysing a number of case studies.

3D Computer Animation

Through a series of workshops you will learn the basics of 3D computer animation, modelling, texturing and rigging. Once you have the relevant skills, you will create a short 3D animation set on a particular theme.

2D Computer Animation

This module explores frame by frame rotoscoping and other computer animation techniques using a variety of software. Workshops will cover areas including lip synching and walk cycles as well as focusing on the principles of animation. The techniques that you learn will be used to create a short 2D animation on a specified theme.

Year 3

Core Module

Individual Study

You will define an area of research within the field of digital media and develop a piece of academic writing. The module is taught through a combination of seminars, research workshops, lectures, and individual tutorials.

Likely optional modules

During each year of the course, a range of optional modules are available, offering you the opportunity to develop skills around your areas of interest.

Individual Creative Practice

You are encouraged to design and develop a sustained individual project employing one of the three key areas of digital media covered by the course, digital imaging, web design, and moving image. The practical project you submit at the end of the year may showcase your achievements, be related to a product, service, or idea, and may also demonstrate your unique approach to digital media and project development.

Digital Entrepreneurship

You will work in groups, and define a project that borrows properties from the spirit of entrepreneurship. The final production will include a combination of outputs demonstrating the unique properties of digital media production. Social media and networking using digital media are key aspects of this module.

Professional Creative Practice

This module uses a ‘live’ project, and you will be working with an outside business or service, to create a business identity. You will develop some the following: short videos, animations, posters, leaflets and banners.

Mixed Media dissertation (taught in association with the Film, Radio and Television Studies course)

This module permits you to choose a method of presenting your ideas and concepts on a topic defined through lectures, group discussions and individual tutorials. The actual output format you choose for the dissertation may include film, animation, painting, drawing, print, and/or online content. This module offers you the opportunity for your projects to be overseen and taught by lecturers across two of the school’s courses.

Specialised study by project (taught in association with the Film, Radio and Television Course)

Combining both digital media skills for film production and post production, and applying the distinctive properties of digital media, you will work with lecturers from the Digital Media and Film, Radio and Television courses, to produce a creative project on a theme or concept of your choice. This module will be relevant if you wish to specialise in digital compositing and image generation, and digital animation. This module offers you the opportunity for your projects to be overseen and taught by lecturers across two of the School’s courses.

What can I do next?

Our Digital Media course is designed to enable you to define a creative solution to a specific issue or tasks in a number of different professional contexts. In this sense, the skills you will gain on the Digital Media course are applicable in a broad range of environments, and are transferable across a wide range of careers. As a graduate from the course you should be suited to working in a wide variety of contexts where critical awareness and technical knowledge are essential requirements. Graduates may also go on to undertake a higher degree at Canterbury Christ Church University or elsewhere.

“Throughout my degree, I was able to develop my creative skills and creative thinking. I have to be creative in my current role, as I work with lots of different businesses to help improve their overall brand image and online PR. In my current role, I have to do presentations to clients. Whilst studying, I had the opportunity to talk about my digital media projects to the class. This was good practice as I was able to use these examples when applying to a role in digital marketing.”

Overall workload

You will study three modules per semester. Each module has a standard 50 hours of student contact.

This will typically be composed of workshops, lectures, seminars, field based activity, tutorials, and feedback on assignments.Your actual contact hours will depend on the optional modules you select.

Independent learning

You will be assigned a personal tutor, who will help support you and guide your academic development throughout your studies. You will also be expected to engage in 150 hours of self-directed study per taught module. This will include developing you technical skills, project work, and library study.

Academic input and Teaching

There are currently three full time lecturers dedicated to course management, design and delivery of course content. Our staff hold doctoral and teaching qualifications and engage in practice (animators, artists, filmmakers), and research in fields related to digital media.

You will also be taught by a range of professional experts, who either deliver modules or present their knowledge and expertise during one-off ‘masterclass’ visits. These professional contacts comprise a vital part of the course and demonstrate our commitment to professional perspectives, work-based learning, and employability. Some students have secured work placements with our professional contacts.

All programmes are informed by the University’s Learning and Teaching Strategy 2015-2020.

You will be assessed through practical coursework, group projects, presentations, and essays, and reports. Assessments will take account of your newly-acquired knowledge and practical ability, and also the process of developing skills and the ability to apply them in the world of work.

The specialist facilities include professional level computing suites, high quality stills and video recording equipment, drawing tablets, scanners and printers. Industry strength creative multimedia software is also available to you.

In addition to this we now have planning permission to build a new £12m arts facility on campus, equipped with the latest technology and bespoke learning spaces for our arts and humanities students.

We expect our new arts building to open in September 2018, with building work now well underway. 

Our main campus in Canterbury has city centre facilities on its doorstep and, of course, you will benefit from all the new arts building has to offer.

An industry panel comprising professionals associated with the course advises on the teaching and content of specific modules, including year three Professional Creative Practice and Digital Entrepreneurship in relation to the development of professional employment skills.

BA (Hons) Digital Media with Foundation Year

This course can also be studied over four years with an additional foundation year (Year 0) for those without the formal entry qualifications. The foundation year is designed to provide you with the grounding you need to progress on to the degree.
