Non-medical Prescribing Programme 2018/19

The Non-Medical Prescribing Programme Can be taken as standalone programme of study or part of the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice.

This programme of study will enable you to extend your scope of clinical practice to prescribe medicines as an Independent and Supplementary Non-medical Prescriber. Non-medical prescribing is becoming a well-established means of managing a service user’s condition enabling quicker access to medicines, delivering high quality, innovative clinical care and offering choice for service users. Students who have completed the NMP programme have identified that it transformed the way they manage service users (Bowden 2016) . The programme presents an opportunity to explore current practice as well as supporting professional and personal development. Attending this programme you will be undertaking education at level 6 or level 7 as standalone modules. You may also be undertaking this programme as part of the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice. You will have advanced skills in assessment and diagnosis and have demonstrable expertise in an identified area of clinical practice, e.g. mental health, adult nursing, child nursing, learning disabilities and midwifery. The clinical area/conditions for which you will be prescribing will be clearly identified e.g. minor injury/ailment, respiratory disease, pain management.

As the programme develops it is envisaged that students will become part of a community of non-medical prescribers that will continue after completion of the programme allowing students and future practitioners to work together in a safe space where they can challenge practice and transform care through development of research. Encouragement for further study will be given by the programme director and personal academic tutor and NMP students will be supported if they wish to continue their academic journey.

The Non-medical Prescribing Programme has been developed to provide you with knowledge and skills to allow you to develop and progress your clinical practice role. The programme aims to prepare you to prescribe safely, appropriately and cost effectively as an independent/supplementary nurse prescriber. On completion of the programme you will be confident and competent to perform your prescribing role independently. Students who successfully complete all elements of the programme will be eligible to apply to have their qualification recorded with the NMC as a Nurse Independent/Supplementary Prescriber if they are an NMC registrant.

The programme content is designed to enable the development of skills, knowledge and understanding of the principles of prescribing practice across the eight themes outlined below:

  1. Consultation, decision making and therapy, including referral
  2. Influences on, and psychology of prescribing
  3. Prescribing in a team context
  4. Clinical pharmacology, including the effects of co-morbidity
  5. Evidence based practice and issues of quality related to prescribing
  6. The policy context, legal, and ethical aspects of prescribing
  7. Professional accountability and responsibility
  8. Prescribing in the public health context

But also works alongside the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (2016) A competency framework for all prescribers.

The programme consists of both theoretical and experiential learning that allows the student to continue working in their own area of work whilst exploring the competencies and standards of prescribing practice.

There are two mandatory modules that run concurrently, one is based on Pharmacology and the other on Prescribing Practice. Each module is 20 credits at level 6 or 7.

Pharmacology and prescribing principles: The aims of the module are to prepare practitioners to prescribe treatments that are safe and effective for the people in their care and to ensure that they will be confident and competent to perform their prescribing role independently.

This is assessed by a written pharmacology examination and classroom based numeracy test and a reflective essay.

Prescribing in practice : The aims of this module is to prepare practitioners to prescribe treatments that are safe and effective for the people in their care and to ensure that they will be confident and competent to perform their prescribing role independently.

This is assessed by an electronic portfolio and an observed examination of clinical practice which is completed in the students own work area.

Entry requirements for this programme are in line with University policies on widening participation and equality of opportunity. It is also essential that you have professional registration to practice in health and/or social care or equivalent. Students accessing the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice programme have to meet the recommended requirement of any International Student accessing programmes in the United Kingdom (UK), the application process will be followed according to the University procedures. In addition to the entry requirements for the University the following requirements are specifically for NMC registrants:

    • Must be a recognised professional that is eligible to undertake the non-medical prescribing V300 qualification. A first degree and/or evidence of the ability to study at level 6/7
    • You must have at least three years’ experience in registered practice.
    • You must have been practising in the clinical field which there is intent to prescribe for one year immediately preceding the application.
    • You should be able to provide evidence from employer of ability in diagnosis, physical examination to enable application of nurse prescribing skills, this can be a recognised qualification evidence of relevant experience
    • You must have a Designated Medical Practitioner (DMP) who meets the eligibility criteria for the practice supervision of nurse and midwife prescribers
    • You must have a current DBS check (less than three years old) that you are able to evidence.

All entrants must satisfy the programme’s requirements concerning clearance in relation to criminal convictions. Students on the programme must remain in good standing in relation to such requirements, including, where required, registration for the updating of certificates by the Disclosure and Barring Service.

As a student attending the programme you will have been supported by your Trust/ organisation and as such you are in a senior position, or working towards this, in the clinical setting. This programme will enable career progression. Working in partnership with the Trust/organisation to develop the curriculum has ensured that on successful completion of the programme the expectations of the Trust/ organisation’s concept of the non-medical prescriber role have been met.

On completion of the programme you will be expected to record your qualification with the regulatory body to enable you to prescribe within your practice area. You will also be expected to inform your manager and ensure that you maintain your practice by completing regular NMP updates.

You could also use this qualification and credits towards an Advanced Clinical Practice MSc. The programme will enable you to gain experience, skills and attributes that are essential in shaping your own future.

To access this programme, you can either be NHS/employer funded or you can self-fund your modules.

Teaching and learning will be focused on the development of analytical thinking and critical reflection whilst educating the whole person. Ability in creativity, problem solving, questioning, reasoning and development of individual thought at a higher level will be central to the teaching and learning strategies whilst working together with organisations as partners in learning. The taught element of the programme will consist of a range of learning and teaching strategies to enable students to meet the programme learning outcomes. The education that is offered reflects the needs of the whole person learners who are, or are becoming, advanced practitioners. There will be an interactive approach to learning and teaching acknowledging students prior learning and expertise in clinical practice.

Workshops will be utilised to enable students to practice skills and gain experience in various aspects of prescribing practice. Workshops comprise a theoretical component by means of lecture or academic/student led activity and a practical element which will include role play.

Learning and teaching strategies will take account of the combining of level 6 and 7 students for classroom learning. Whilst studying together offers the potential for enhancing the learning experience careful and skilled facilitation is required to ensure the learning needs of both groups are met. Core material will be delivered to a mixed group in the form of lecture, case presentation and the use of video or audio materials. There will then be opportunity for academic facilitated break away seminars to enable differentiated activities to reflect the needs of each group of students. The level 7 specific group seminars will encourage and enable students to present knowledge through case presentation in a safe learning environment. Students will be encouraged to share opinions, give feedback and develop understanding of different points of view. These seminars contribute to others own learning through the processes of reviewing, summarising, questioning, and reasoning. This approach will enhance the students learning as the curriculum is designed for transformation and encourages the student to think about their graduate employability.

The use of reflection is well established within prescribing and so the programme aims to encourage students to critically analyse practice and consider strategies for development. A learning contract will be developed by the student in the practice setting with support from the DMP (practice assessor). The Personal Academic Tutor will arrange a practice visit which encourages a quality review of the learning environment whilst building a learning community that supports practice as well as the student. The structure of the individual tutorial will adopt a reflective approach further enhancing the integration of theory and practice. Students will also complete an electronic portfolio and a reflective journal as part of their development in reflective practice.

Students will be provided with appropriate guided reading throughout the programme. The programme will be delivered by a team of academic staff with particular expertise in prescribing and experience of current research, practice experience and topical issues will inform teaching and learning.

The programme will be utilising a blended learning/ flipped classroom approach to learning. This will enable students to have a flexible and manageable learning environment that fits with their work and life balance. Blending face-to-face and online activities has been selected to achieve the programme and module learning outcomes. This mixture of learning allows students to learn at their own pace as well as suiting different learning needs. The number of face-to-face classroom based days will normally be four 8 hour sessions per 20 credit module. This will be directed learning, which will provide meaningful debate around clinical cases, development of knowledge, reflection on learning activities and students will be able to share their learning and experiences in clinical practice.

The Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) will be used to support the programme providing essential programme documents, extracts of required reading material and lecture notes. The VLE provides an opportunity for students to communicate with each other, lecturers and their Personal Tutor during periods of non-attendance, via email and the discussion board. Students will have access to a wide range of exercises and additional material designed to guide their non-contact learning hours. The VLE provides a range of student study support and activities designed to facilitate graduate skills and the success of all students. Students will be encouraged to use the self-assessment tools in the planning and identification of strategies for their academic journey through the programme. Students will also have the additional benefit of access to all programme materials via VLE. An electronic portfolio will be used via Pebble pad for the student to record their reflective practice and submit an e portfolio of their reflections in practice.

The successful completion of the non-medical prescribing programme does not mean that you are able to work as a prescriber, you must meet your employer’s requirements and register your qualification with the NMC or other regulatory body and this will incur a cost.

NMP Programme’s Assessment Strategy conforms to the University’s Regulations and Credit Framework for the Conferment of Awards. For each 20 credit module, the assessments are weighted at 4000 words or equivalent. Formative or summative assessment will take place throughout the programme.
