Facilities and Services

Facilities and services covers a broad area, from computing and catering to timetabling and the buildings themselves.

To make sure any new developments fit the needs of the University, we engage with students so we know that everything feeds into improving the overall experience of studying with Canterbury Christ Church University.

Our aim is to give you timetable information that is relevant to you.

  • Individual Student Timetables (ISTs) have now been introduced for most students. You will have details of where and when all your lectures, seminars and other programme-related activities for the term ahead are happening.  Any last-minute changes or cancellations to timetabled sessions, which the Timetabling and Rooming Office are made aware of, will be highlighted in yellow to help make them more noticeable.

We want to make sure that you have the best experience at our campuses with the latest facilities:

  • A £4.6 million Student Hub opened in 2017 at the Medway Campus. Once the site of a swimming pool and skittles alley, the listed building is being transformed by the Universities of Kent and Greenwich, into a new, vibrant entertainment and social space for all students from Kent, Greenwich and Canterbury Christ Church Universities.
  • Salomons Centre for Applied Psychology and the Library moved to their new location at 1 Meadow Road, Tunbridge Wells, TN1 2YG. The new building is centrally located and is well served by public transport. This acquisition will secure the University’s position in Tunbridge Wells and confirms our commitment to maintaining a future presence in West Kent.
  • The Grounds team continue to make improvements to the campuses including in 2017 a major renovation project which transformed the Coleridge Gardens.
  • Working with the Students' Union we enabled the Prison to be used for the first time for one of the best ever Summer Balls.
  • A new SU Social space at Broadstairs campus was created, moving Touchdown into Dwell.
  • The Sports Centre had a major £2m refurbishment last year installing a new Pulse Move system, upgraded gym facilities, spin studio and a new dance studio as well as a new sports hall at Polo Farm.

Sometimes it is the little things that count. In 2017 Facilities installed 64 lockers at Augustine House as well as introduced an urn so students could make hot drinks when they wanted to.

Ongoing investment, combined with your feedback in the University surveys, helps us to keep computing facilities up-to-date.

  • All student PCs across all campuses were upgraded to Microsoft Windows 10 meaning students could access the latest version of Windows.
  • New super fast WiFi  was installed across all our University Accommodation. It is now possible to get super-fast WiFi coverage in more areas inside and outside buildings, across the majority of the University’s Estate.
  • A new IT Training  programme has been developed to support students from an introduction to University systems to Turnitin and training in the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Print cost were reduced for all students by 20%.
  • To help you save time, make your work easier to do and increase your overall productivity, a selection of free tools, apps and assistive software is available. Read&Write Gold, is installed on all student University devices, and JAWS and Dolphin supernova, are installed on two PCs in a dedicated room on the ground floor of Augustine House.

We know it is important to make sure we create a home from home in University managed accommodation and we constantly listen to our residents to identify where we can improve.

In 2017 we introduced Student Accommodation Champions who provide peer-to-peer support for nervous or anxious first-timers to help them with the transition into independent living; providing guidance and advice from all aspects of living away from home. They hold weekly drop-in sessions to meet students who may want to discuss anything from problems with fault reporting to how to access their post.

During the Summer there was a major refurbishment investment.:

  • We have spent £235k on Pin Hill refreshing the internal parts of Carey and Ramsey and carrying out external redecorations. Internally, we have replaced all floor finishes, redecorated throughout and refurbished the kitchens. An additional £63k was spent on fitted furniture to the bedrooms.
  • Lanfranc underwent a similar improvement with £199k spent on refurbishment and £78k on furniture. Enhanced luxury floor coverings to bedrooms (Amtico) and full redecoration to Houses 30-35 and 13-16. Also external refurbishment of windows and doors. Fitted bedroom furniture of a higher spec to Pin Hill.
  • 2 Houses, 25 North Holmes Road and 62 Havelock Street were also upgraded with a £38k refurbishment and £8k spent on new furniture.
  • New high speed Wi-Fi was introduced into most of our accommodation and students can also now connect to the internet via ResNet for their games consoles or smart TVs.

Getting to and from lectures on time isn’t always easy. With your feedback, we are able to offer travel options and discounts in partnership with local companies and schemes to make life that bit easier.

  • Working in partnership with Stagecoach Bus Company, we are now able to offer even better discount travel ticket options for Christ Church students resulting in up to 50% savings. The CCCU unirider is a new bus ticket available to all Canterbury Christ Church University students. Whether you’re travelling to a lecture, into the city centre or going for a night out, the unirider ticket will get you there. While the Megarider tickets offer great value for money and flexibility giving you unlimited travel on Stagecoach in your chosen zone or zones for however long you want your ticket for.
