Working for Yourself

Whether you are planning to start your own business or looking to become self-employed, we are able to help you with the steps that you’ll need to complete.

With all the freedom that comes with being self-employed, comes a number of responsibilities and important steps to consider. Some of the steps should be completed whether you plan to be a sole trader or if your enterprising idea warrants the need to create a new business.

Working for Yourself

Some of the things you need to do when becoming self-employed include the need to work out your employment status, informing HM Revenue & Customs, learning how to record financial transactions through to understanding how to complete tax return. The following downloadable document is a short guide that covers these steps and more besides.

Alongside this document, additional information is available via The CORE or through emailing enterprise@canterbury.ac.uk.

Starting a Business

Another way of setting out on your own is through creating a new business. To do this you will need to take your initial idea and turn it into a business plan, decide upon your business model or structure, and register the business officially with Companies House. For advice on some of the things you should be aware of, download the following document.

Support is available to help you turn your business idea into a reality within the Business Start-Up section of The CORE, and via enterprise@canterbury.ac.uk.
