Biography

Dr Kate Woolf-May, BSc (Brighton), MSc (Lougborough), PhD (Kent), is Principal Research Fellow in Sport and Exercise Science. She has an MSc from Loughborough University and a PhD from the University of Kent.

Research Interests

Dr Woolf-May's interests' focus mainly on the effect that physical activity and exercise have in both the primary and secondary prevention of disease, or disease risk; as well as looking at how disease affects an individual's ability to perform physical activity/exercise. She also has a keen interest in research ethics and is the Vice Chair for the Faculty Research Ethics Committee and sits on the Local NHS Research Ethics Committee.

Grants, Awards & Scholarships

  • £89 000 from the NHS Executive South East (Project Grant Scheme) to examine the effect of phase IV cardiac rehabilitation upon cardiac function, factor XIIa, blood lipid profile and catecholamines. 
  • £30 360 from the NHS Executive South East (Project Grant Scheme) to examine the effect of multiple bouts of brisk walking upon risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome. 
  • £19 291 from East Kent Primary Care Trust to develop calorie maps for the East Kent Area. 
  • £8 000 from Kent County Council Department of Public Scrutiny to examine the effectiveness of short-term exercise referral programmes in promoting exercise adherence and upon markers of obesity in overweight adults. 
  • £6 850 from the British Heart Foundation to fund blood analysis.
