Career Opportunities

This new programme enables students to become qualified science teachers in only three years. It is a broad based degree involving all major areas of science. Successful students will be qualified to teach all areas of science up to GCSE level, and Biology up to A2 level.

Year 1 (Level 4)

In the first year, students will be given a general foundation in the sciences which will prepare them for the more specialist modules at levels 5 and 6. Modules studied will include Variety of Life; Core Science; Introduction to Environmental Systems and The Organism and its Environment plus Microbiology and Cell Culture

Year 2 (Level 5)

At Level 5, students take the compulsory modules: Systems Control 1 and Teaching practice and choose further modules from a wide range of options, including: Molecular Biology; Chemistry; The Earth as a Planetary System; Evolution; Control Systems 2; Reproduction and Development; Anatomy and Physiology and Animal Care and Behaviour.

Year 3 (Level 6)

At Level 6, students choose Practical Ecology Field Week and they will carry out an Individual Study which will be practically based.

Students will do a further three education modules, including teaching practice in schools. Students will be able to discuss an appropriate programme of study with their tutors.

For those without appropriate entry qualifications, Science with Secondary Education may be taken as a four year degree, beginning with the one year full-time Science Foundation.
