Certificate in Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
This short course will introduce students to the basic concepts and principles of GIS and explain how this growing technology can bring real value to their work place. The course is centred around the practical use of ESRI software (ArcGIS, Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst) showing how key techniques can be applied to a range of situations, such as:
-
Planning - use within local and county councils
-
The Environment
-
Telecommunications
-
Tourism and Marketing
-
Police work
-
Health
-
Housing
-
Demographics, etc.
The course will also demonstrate how other technologies such as Remote Sensing (aerial photography/satellite data/LiDAR) and Global Positioning Systems (G.P.S.) can be successfully integrated with GIS to provide powerful tools within these applications.
Additionally you will have the opportunity to complete an online ESRI certified ‘Virtual Campus’ course to receive industry recognised accreditation.
Illustrative Course Content
The course will cover the whole range of ideas surrounding the subject area of GIS, including the following:
-
Integrated G.I.S./remote sensing basics
-
Data collection, data sources and types of data
-
Applications and case studies of GIS
-
Advanced G.I.S. techniques
-
Databases and database management
-
Global Positioning Systems
-
Digital Surface Modelling
Assessment and Academic Standing
The course has a strong practical element. Theory is balanced with practical work that is project-based to suit as far as possible individual needs.
The credit value and the details of assessment are currently being reviewed in line with changes in the University’s general Modular Scheme – full details will be posted as soon as they are available.
Entry Requirements and Selection Procedures
Applicants will be expected to have qualifications at 'A' level or an equivalent qualification such as GNVQ Advanced or an Access course. However, an interest in GIS and a need to obtain training in such areas is the main requirement. Applicants may be interviewed. The course fee is currently under review and details will be posted as soon as possible.
