Research interests
My research areas are very wide and stem from a general curiosity about human choices and behaviour. They are strongly influenced by critical psychological ideas and correspond broadly with the areas of cross-cultural and applied developmental, social and health psychology.
I am particularly interested in the interplay between individual and cultural levels when exploring human experience and behaviour specifically the connection of discourses and individual, an area I explored in my PhD on how culture, discourses and individual characteristics might be seen to work together to produce certain behaviours in the area of adolescent sexual health.
Currently, I am conducting research in two different areas of psychology.
In social psychology tradition, my colleague, Dr Dennis Nigbur, and I are conducting research into the role of historical events in the experience of national identity.
In addition, my colleague, Dr Britta Osthaus, and I are developing research into how people behave in accidental dwelling fires and what places people at risk of suffering or death through this.
Other interests
Methodologically, I am particularly interested in qualitative and mixed-methods research, especially in developing innovative research solutions to increase our understanding of complex psychological and social phenomena. I have contributed to discussions on methodological issues through presentations and attendance at methodological conferences and workshops.
In addition, I am interested in advanced ethics in psychological research.
PhD applications
I would be very interested in supervising PhD students particularly in adolescent health psychology, but would be happy to expand my area to other elements of Health Psychology.
