Year 1
Compulsory modules
Students take the following courses:
MPSMD1PSY Introduction to Psychology
In this module you will be introduced to the core areas of Psychology. You will also be given an overview of the historical development of psychology as a discipline, and learn about the nature of psychological explanation and the diversity of practical applications of psychology.
MPSMD1RMP Introduction to Research Methods in Psychology
In this module you will be introduced to some of the basic concepts and techniques used in psychological research, this will let you gain some familiarity with the most common research methods in psychology and provide a grounding in basic statistical analysis. You will have opportunities to analyse data manually and via computer packages (e.g. SPSS). This will help you not only in conducting your own research, but also to understand psychological literature.
MPSMD1PCB Perspectives on Cognition and Behaviour
In this module you will be introduced to a range of psychological perspectives on cognition and behaviour that have played a key role in the development of Psychology as a discipline. You will learn how these perspectives have shaped, and continue to influence, contemporary psychological theory and research, and be able to consider the nature of psychological explanation and to begin to develop your critical thinking in this area.
MPSMD1PSP Psychology in Practice
In this module you will learn about different career opportunities in psychology. It will provide you with information on how to prepare for each specific career path by illustrating existing legislation and professional requirements. You will also be encouraged to reflect on the contributions of psychology to various real life contexts and on the difficulties encountered by psychologists in the profession in using theoretical and empirical aspect of psychology within different applied settings.

Students also choose either a starred level 4 module from another course in the Combined Honours framework, or the following Psychology module:
MPSMD1EVP Evolutionary Psychology
In this module you will be introduced to the principles of evolution and their wide-spread application to the scientific study of human and non-human behaviour. You will explore, using evidence from empirical field and laboratory studies, the effects of natural selection on a wide range of human behaviour, like mate choice, cooperation, family interactions and altruism. You will also learn subject specific skills, which are of wide applicability across the whole range of psychology, especially social and cognitive psychology.
Year 2
