Programme Pathway Details

Below are mapped out the five programme pathways which comprise the Politics and International Relations framework. 

  Single Honours Politics and Global Governance

  This single honours offering fits within the General Modular Scheme (GMS) of the University. There are 120 credits per level, a total of 360 credits across three levels.

 Level 1 has 6 core modules (equivalent to 120 credits). The content of these modules have been designed in such a way that students are afforded the opportunity to engage with the key programme learning outcomes for single honours students. These learning outcomes have been designed with close reference to subject benchmark statements. These modules are:

  • The Coming of Globalisation
  • Introduction to Politics and Governance
  • Key Political Thinkers
  • EU: Continent and Community
  • Governing the UK
  • Politics, Power and the State.

 Each of these modules is equivalent to 20 credits.   

 Levels 2 and 3 allow for the more sophisticated development of knowledge and understanding and skills. At Level 2, all students must take  

  • Democracies and Alternative Regimes
  • Liberalism and its Discontents
  • Political Research and Practice
  • Global Governance

 Students must then select a further 40 credits of modules from EU: Power, Policy and Integration; The Modern American Presidency; Uneasy Neighbours: The USA, Canada and Latin America; Western Europe: Space and Society; Environment and Development; Law, State and Society.

At Level 3, all students must take 

  • Ideological Wars
  • War and Conflict in Global Society
  • Critical Issues in Contemporary Politics
  • Individual Study (minimum 20 credits)

Students must then select a further 40 credits of modules from International Law and Human Rights; Global Economic Systems; Space, Place and Politics; Environmental Politics; The Shadow of Castro; Gendering the Political; Radical Political Thought; The Supreme Court; Social Movements.

 At Level 3, all students must take 

  • Contemporary International Relations Theory
  • Ideological Wars
  • War and Conflict in Global Society
  • Individual Study (minimum 20 credits)

Students must then select a further 40 credits of modules from International Law and Human Rights; Global Economic Systems; Space, Place and Politics; Environmental Politics; The Shadow of Castro; Gendering the Political; Radical Political Thought; The Supreme Court; Social Movements.

Combined Honours Politics and Governance

 This combined honours offering fits within the General Modular Scheme (GMS) of the University. All students at Level 1 must take 60 credits of politics modules, and 60 credits from their other programme of study (making 120 credits in total). Students can then select the 'balance' of their degree in accordance with the rules of the GMS. Normally, this would comprise a minimum of 40 credits of politics modules at levels 2 and 3, and a maximum of 80.

 Level 1 has 3 core modules which enable students to develop an introductory understanding of key discipline areas in accordance with Benchmark requirements. These modules are:

  • Introduction to Politics and Governance
  • The Coming of Globalisation
  • Key Political Thinkers

 Each of these modules is equivalent to 20 credits.   

 Levels 2 and 3 allow for the more sophisticated development of knowledge and understanding and skills. All students must take

  •  Liberalism and its Discontents
  • Democracies and Alternative Regimes

 60 credit students must also take

  •  Political Research and Practice

 80 credit students may then choose from: EU: Power, Policy and Integration; Law, State and Society; The Modern American Presidency; Uneasy Neighbours; Western Europe: Space and Society; Environment and Development.   

 At Level 3, all students must take

 60- 80 credit students may then choose from: Individual Study (20 credits); War and Conflict in Global Society; Global Economic Systems; Space, Place and Politics; Radical Political Thought; The Supreme Court; Environmental Politics; Gendering the Political; The Shadow of Castro; Social Movements.

 The overarching philosophy here – as elsewhere – is to enhance student choice whilst ensuring that benchmark requirements are met.

 Combined Honours International Relations

 This combined honours offering fits within the General Modular Scheme (GMS) of the University. All students at Level 1 must take 60 credits of politics modules, and 60 credits from their other programme of study (making 120 credits in total). Students can then select the 'balance' of their degree in accordance with the rules of the GMS.
