Nicola Kelly is a mental health nurse and senior lecturer in the Department of Applied Psychology, Salomons Campus. She graduated from Christchurch University in 1999, and went on to study for a postgraduate diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy at the University, (pre- IAPT) having already undertaken several short CBT courses.
Nicola spent four years working full time in an acute inpatient setting in the NHS, treating adults with acute and chronic mental health problems as well as detoxification treatment for alcohol and drug users. She established and participated in group supervision with external facilitators for all ward staff and offered individual clinical supervision to both student and qualified nurses. After working for some time as charge nurse, Nicola had the choice to progress via management but preferred to retain a clinical focus. She moved to a community based post in 2003, working in a GP practice at a university setting – primarily with undergraduates aged 18-25, but also with staff and other local residents up to age 74. Nicola is experienced in working with adults with psychosis, bi-polar affective disorder and personality disorder, as well as obsessive-compulsive disorder, social phobia, panic disorder, and depression. She particularly enjoys using CBT when working with the latter four client groups.
She joined the department here in May 2010 and continues to work part-time in her NHS role.
Nicola is specifically interested in clinical supervision and is planning research into comparing methods of assessing competence from audio clips/live supervision in CBT
