Dr Michael Maltby initially read for a degree in Civil Engineering at Imperial College but altered direction to pursue a career in Psychology. Following two years working in psychiatric services he completed his first degree in Psychology at the University of Aston in Birmingham. He qualified in Clinical Psychology in 1984 undertaking his professional training with South East Thames Regional Health Authority.
From that time he has specialised in psychotherapeutic work with older people and working age adults and also in the provision of consultancy to individuals and groups. Alongside clinical, organisational and service development roles he has been active in the training of clinical psychologists, counsellors and health and social care staff. In 1997 he moved from an NHS head of specialty post to the role of clinical director of the Salomons Doctoral Programme in Clinical Psychology with a continuing clinical and consultancy role within the NHS. In 2005 he assumed the role of joint clinical psychology programmes director and from 2008 became one of the three leads of the re-configured Department of Applied Psychology. He is undertaking the role of head of department during the 2009-10 academic year.
In addition to being a clinical psychologist Michael is a chartered counselling and health psychologist. He has also completed a full training with the Institute of Group Analysis (London) leading to qualification as a Group Analyst. He has completed doctoral research into the use of writing for personal development at the University of Sussex and is a professional member of Lapidus, an organisation which promotes the use of creative writing for health and well-being. His current research interests lie at the interface between health care and the arts; particularly the therapeutic and reflexive use of writing, and the role of attention and embodiment in personal development and change.
