Applying for the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology: Information for self-funding applicants.

Introduction

The Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU), Salomons, is a 3-year full-time taught Programme which entitles successful graduates to apply for registration with the UK Health Professions Council (HPC), and for chartered membership of the British Psychological Society (BPS) as a Clinical Psychologist.

The Doctoral Programme at Salomons is planning to offer a limited number of places to appropriately qualified International, and British and European applicants, for entry in September 2012.

Canterbury Christ Church University prides itself on its international reputation as an excellent provider of training for people working within health, education and social services. The University aspires to further develop its distinctive profile of training in the public sector by responding to emerging workforce demands and expanding national and international partnerships in innovative and productive ways.

Criteria for Entry

Self-funding International, British and European applicants will be subject to the same rigorous selection procedures as existing applicants applying for NHS-funded places (please refer to the ’Information for Applicants|’ section of our website). This will ensure that the standards of excellence for which Clinical Psychology Trainees at Salomons are renowned, will continue to be upheld.

Academic Requirements

Applicants should have an Undergraduate or Postgraduate degree in Psychology which includes a substantive period of study in psychology. Degrees awarded outside of the UK will need to be assessed for eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) by the BPS.  Applicants applying with UK undergraduate degrees need to ensure that their degree also confers such eligibility. Applicants who are uncertain about this need to check with the BPS before applying. Further information about GBC can be found on the GBC section of the BPS web page|.

The minimum requirement for entry onto the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology is the equivalent of an upper second class degree in Psychology (2:1). Some prior clinically relevant research experience is also desirable.

Proficiency in English

Applicants whose first language is not English, and whose university qualifications were not taught or examined in English, will need to provide evidence of their written and spoken proficiency in English, achieved through successful completion of a formal English language qualification. The Programme at Salomons accepts the Clearing House for Postgraduate Courses in Clinical Psychology requirements on standards of English proficiency. Further information on these can be found by following this link| to the language proficiency requirements of the Clearing House website.

Relevant work experience

Applicants will need to demonstrate that they have gained some direct experience of work relevant to the practice of a Clinical Psychologist. Experience can be gained in a range of different mental health settings within the public, private, voluntary or academic sectors, either on a paid or unpaid basis. Relevant work experience will need to include direct contact with clients.

Applicants are required to have obtained one full year (or its equivalent on a part-time basis) of such relevant work experience by the time of applying to the Programme.
