Biography

Dr. Kate Gee joined the Department of Psychology in April 2013 and is now a Senior Lecturer. Her research focuses on music-making, careers and wellbeing. She utilises applied methodologies, and lifespan, career, and social identity frameworks to understand phenomena in the lives of musicians. She is part of the editorial board for the journal Arts and Health, and has recently been appointed a trustee at the British Association for Musict Therapy.

Dr. Gee was awarded her PhD in Psychology (2010) from The University of Sheffield. She worked under the supervision of Prof. Chris Spencer and Prof. Stephanie Pitts. Her research addressed the relationships between social and musical identities in professional musicians. She also worked part-time as an RA for Sheffield Cognition and Neuro Imaging Lab, furthering her interest in clinical work. 

Previously, Dr. Gee was an part time post-doctoral researcher and founder member Sheffield Performer and Audience Research Centre, whilst teaching at The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University on a range of arts, health and wellbeing related courses.

MPSMD2AMP: Applied Music Psychology (convenor 2014-16) Designed cross faculty course to support second year music and psychology students to learn about applied music psychology and design their own research projects, culminating in a mini conference. Course embeds employability skills into their learning, and has been presented at ‘HEPE – Higher Education Professionalism and Employability conference’. MPSTH4HWB: Health and Wellbeing (convenor 2015-current) Designed experiential course for postgraduate conversion course students to understand and examine mental health and wellbeing. Course reconsiders the traditional emphasis on biological and psychiatric models for ‘abnormal psychology,’ by engaging students with industry academics, practitioners, and service users. Course assessment focuses on developing personal reflective practice and effective ways to communicate science to the public through podcasting.

MPSTH4RES1: Research Methods 1 (lecturer 2016-current) Taught and redesigned the ‘introduction to qualitative research’ half of this course to embrace flipped classroom learning. The results of this change will be published as part of her PGCAP / HE Fellowship application.
