I have been working at CCCU since 1995 and in 2009 I became the Head of the Department of Law and Criminal Justice Studies. During my time at the University I have led on the development of many innovative academic programmes in policing. I am one of the key contributors to the Student Police Officer Handbook published by Oxford University Press (8th Edition currently at press) and I have published around different political aspects of policing. I am particularly interested in the shifting philosophical underpinnings of policing from liberal to democratic principles. In 2008 I organised and chaired an international policing conference at CCCU on Knowledge Led Policing and immediately following this conference helped to establish the Higher Education Forum for Learning and Development in Policing. I am Chair of the Higher Education Forum, which includes representatives from over 20 universities across the UK. I spent a year long sabbatical at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver during 2004 and as part of my teaching commitments I contribute to a collaborative MSc Policing programme run in partnership between CCCU and the Police Academy in the Netherlands. I have been an external examiner at Ulster University and I am currently the external examiner for a number of police and crime related programmes at Teesside University. I have participated in Skills for Justice working groups and as a member of National Police Improvement Agency led Higher Education Steering Group. I have also worked on different projects for the Higher Education Academy. My PhD, completed in 2002, was in the field of philosophy of education and I am a member of the British Society of Criminology and the Philosophy of Education Great Britain Society.
