Transport history
'D.L. Salomons at the wheel of one of his
62 cars.'
Sir David Lionel Salomons was a pioneer in the introduction of motor cars to Britain . There are photographs of the Tunbridge Wells Horseless Carriage Exhibition, the first motor show in Britain , and many photographs of early motor vehicles.
There are comprehensive collections of papers associated with the change in law that allowed vehicles on the road without a man walking in front with a red warning flag, and with the formation of the Self-Propelled Traffic Association and other automobile clubs. Some items connected with motor car trials and with early motor races can also be found.
As well as motoring history, there are a considerable number of items connected with railway history, and a few with flying. See the separate ‘Ballooniana' section for items associated with ballooning history. D.L. Salomons' huge collection of prints and drawing relating to the history of transport (5,372 items) was left to the Bilbliotheque Nationale in Paris .
