David Lionel Salomons collected a considerable number of medals relating to the history of transport. They tell the story of railway history across Europe from the Liverpool to Manchester Railway of 1830 to the Warsaw to Bromberg Railway of 1862, with a few from further afield – such as the Trans-Andean Railway of 1870.

There are also medals from coronations, openings of buildings and bridges, visits of foreign heads of state, the opening of the Suez Canal , the Great Exhibition and so on. There are several important medals struck to commemorate early balloon flights.

There is also a significant number of badges in the collection, many from the early days of motoring and motoring organizations such as the Self-Propelled Traffic Association and the Automobile Club de France.
