Transport and Travel Strategy

The University is committed to understanding our transport needs and to the development of sustainable travel arrangements. It has carried out various analysis of parking and travel of staff, including a comprehensive staff travel survey (travel information and survey report (pdf)).  From this information and with the assistance of a travel plan and car parking consultation group, the University has developed and adopted a comprehensive sustainable transport policy. This is being led by the Sustainable Transport Manager. The work performed by the University on Travel Planning is now significant and beginning to be recognised locally and nationally. Further information on this is given in the travel plan strategy (pdf) and community activities.

A summary of the Travel Plan Strategy has been provided along with the associated Travel Plan Action Plan.

Information and understanding of needs of staff have been established by various analyses of already available data and travel surveys. A Travel Plan Strategy adopted by the University Senior Management Team in June 2009 contains the strategy and practical elements to be implemented for each of the CCCU campuses, some measures have already been or are shortly to be introduced (e.g. additional facilities for cycles, a cross institutional car share scheme and a comprehensive travel web site).

As discussed in the Travel Plan Strategy, effective management of parking is an integral part of the Travel Plan; the Senior Management Team has agreed a staged parking management strategy. For the main Canterbury campus the stages under consideration are:

As part of the efforts to promote alternatives to one-person-one-car commuter travel the hire/discount purchase scheme for cycles is being well used (see Cycle to Work Scheme). The University Bicycle Users Group (BUG) which has been promoted as part of the Travel Plan is assisting in taking a very active role in promotion of cycling.
