Community Activities
Much of the University’s efforts on sustainable travel and other sustainability issues can be more effectively achieved by working with the wider community. The University is taking an active role in promoting and sharing knowledge and experience, for example in:
- The combined academic institutions car share scheme involves the Universities of Greenwich, Kent and Creative Arts and Mid Kent College in Canterbury, Medway, Thanet, Folkestone, Maidstone and Tonbridge in Kent and other locations in London and Surrey. The University has tried very hard to work with other institutions such as Canterbury College. It is also working with other potential partners on car sharing in the areas of the campuses.
- Developing from this joint working on car sharing, the University is working with local authorities and bus and rail companies in the same areas to promote pedestrian cycle and public transport schemes and better facilities for those with disabilities.
- The promotion and hosting of the Association of Commuter Transport/ Travelwise Parking Management and Travel Plans Masterclass in April 09 by CCCU.
- In the area of its main campus it is active in the activities of the local businesses for a for example ‘C4B’ (Canterbury for Business) and in particular the Environmental Committee of C4B dealing with a full range of environmental issues such as waste, sustainable transport, recycling etc. It is also an active member of the Canterbury City Council promoted Business Travel Plan forum which is presently investigating car clubs and bicycle sharing schemes like Paris and Cheltenham.
