Local Initiatives
These initiatives are ones which all staff can implement in their own department or office with little or no effort. If you have any more suggestions please contact us.
Waste Reduction
- Print and photocopy documents double sided wherever possible
- Use scrap paper printed on one side only to make notes or print draft documents or e-mails
- Use the Print Preview facility to ensure you only print the parts of a document you need
- Used envelopes can be recycled as internal mail envelopes
- Avoid using paper or plastic cups - bring in your own mug and glass for hot and cold drinks
- Where feasible read documents on your PC rather than printing them out
- Use electronic forms instead of paper - they can be e-mailed out which is much quicker than using the post.
- Print department or faculty letterheads and compliments slips. They will be much cheaper and less likely to be redundant.
- Use refills for pens, pads etc.
- Buy recycled products wherever possible as long as they are fit for purpose.
- Encourage staff to share reports, publications etc. rather than having one copy each
Recycling
- Visit the University's recycling pages to see what types of waste can be recycled - paper, cardboard, toner cartridges, plastics, cans, glass and paper cups can all be recycled at Christ Church.
- Ask Domestic Services for more recycling facilities for your office or department
Energy Saving
- Walk up the stairs rather than taking the lift
- Turn the lights out in your office every time you leave (the idea that it uses more energy to turn lights on/off is false)
- Don't turn the lights on at all if your room is light enough
- Switch off your monitor and printer when it is not in use.
- At the end of the day turn your photocopier off. It only takes a couple of minutes to warm up again in the morning
- Unplug mobile phone chargers when not in use - they continue to use small amounts of electricity even when your phone isn't plugged in.
- Don't fill the kettle all the way up to make a single cup of tea
Green Transport
- Lift sharing is a great way of saving money and reducing CO2 emissions
- Take advantage of the University's Cycle to Work scheme which saves you money on buying a new bike and accessories.
- Consider the use of conference calls instead of driving to meetings
