Gold Phase: Operating - Awarded April 2012
Operating is the third phase of the EcoCampus Scheme, which has 6 key elements.
1. The University needs to develop and implement a procedure for communicating roles and responsibilities to all relevant staff and will need to finalise its outline management structure, which defines all roles and responsibilities.
2. A procedure for collating, recording and storing all training records needs to be established, along with a procedure for assessing the competency of all persons whose work may have a significant impact on the environment. As a consequence, all relevant staff will have had adequate training to ensure they understand the environmental issues relating to the institution and their roles and responsibilities for implementing the Environmental Management System (EMS).
3. A procedure for documenting and responding to environmental communications received from inside or outside the University will be developed. This will result in the establishment and maintenance of formal communications channels for the implementation of the EMS.
4. A procedure will be developed that describes the core EMS documentation and the interactions between them. An EMS manual will be developed that describes how the EMS operates and cross references to relevant documentation. Finally, a procedure for controlling EMS documentation will also be established.
5. A procedure must be developed that outlines the management of operational control procedures. Operational control procedures, which address significant aspects, in line with objectives and targets, will be developed.
6. A system that identifies and responds to emergencies that could affect the environment, will be developed. A schedule of associated emergency procedure test drills will be established.
The timescale for completing the Gold Phase is Autumn 2011.
