The University has taken big steps towards supporting a sustainable future. During the academic year 2010-2011 :
- A First Class award in the Green League has been achieved
- A Carbon Management Plan has been approved
- EcoCampus Bronze and Silver stages have been awarded
- Carbon Trust Standard has been achieved
- HEA Green Academy supported the development of the Futures Initiative
- New Strategic Plan approved that puts Sustainability as one of 5 key goals
Governance
A single governance structure which integrates the oversight of all sustainability initiatives reports directly to SMT through the Pro-Vice Chancellor with overall responsibility for Sustainability. A Strategic Management Group provides the overall leadership and comprises the chairs of all sustainability committees and sub-groups, which together cover the wide scope of sustainability at Canterbury Christ Church University.
Personnel involved
The University has a full time Sustainability Development Manager reporting to the Pro Vice Chancellor with responsibility for Sustainability.
The Sustainability Development Manager’s key responsibilities include the promotion of the wider sustainability agenda throughout the University, as well as leading and reporting internally and externally on a number of initiatives relating to both sustainability and carbon management.
The Assistant Facilities Director – Estates and Infrastructure, holds an overall responsibility for promoting environmental and energy issues within the Facilities Services function, and works closely with the Sustainability Development Manager in support of the initiatives covered in this paper.
The Assistant Estates Manager – Energy and Carbon, provides a clear focus on the management and reduction of energy use and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions from the University’s buildings.
The Carbon Reduction Engineer directly supports the Estates and Infrastructure department in both the analysis and reporting of data required for the carbon management action plan and in support of infrastructure change projects to reduce emissions.
Policy
The Sustainability policy is reviewed annually and in March 2011 a new Environmental and Sustainability Policy was approved integrating the key objectives of the Environmental Management System.
