Clarkson House, a 35 year old office block on Rhoadus Town, was purchased by the University as part of significant development plans to expand the facilities and services on offer.

In April 2007 planning permission was granted to construct a four storey building on the site to house a state of the art library and learning centre. The plans for Augustine House were designed by Architects Design Partnership LLP

Work on the site began in November 2007 with the demolition of Clarkson House, and an archaeological investigation followed.

Construction work began in February 2008.
