Mrs Ann Newman

Associate Head Foundation Years and Undergraduate Apprenticeships

School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work

Ann is passionate about the role that apprenticeships can play in the development of a safe and effective nursing workforce.

Since graduation from Kings College, London with a BSc (Hons) Nursing Studies in 1991, I have had extensive experience in Orthopaedic and Trauma nursing, working in London, Hampshire and Kent. I completed my MSc Clinical Studies and Education at Brighton University.

I have worked at the University since 2000, initially on a part-time secondment from a local Acute Trust but full-time since 2004. Within the University, I have held a variety of roles including the Scheme Director for the Health and Social Care CPD Scheme, Programme Director for the BSc (Hons) Clinical Practice and Deputy Chair of the Exam Board for the CPD courses. In addition, I have been module lead and Cohort Lead within the pre-registration adult nursing course. My previous role was that of Course Director for the Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship in which I oversaw the day-to-day running of this course, supporting staff to deliver high quality modules and leading on strategic development of the course. The role required me to work closely with our employer partners in supporting students, placement planning and discussing course developments.

I am now the Associate Head of School: Apprenticeships and Vocational Courses - a role that I share with a colleague. Together we manage a team of people and lead on the strategic developments related to apprenticeships and vocational courses, including the Foundation Year.

Since starting my involvement with apprenticeships I have become increasingly interested in work-based learning, and supporting students and academics involved in apprenticeship courses. This includes a particular focus on sustainability in relation to sustainable self, sustainable learning and sustainable communities.

My teaching is linked to the apprenticeship courses. As part of this I facilitate group clinical supervision in addition to delivering sessions related to sustainability, academic development and sessions linked to the Ofsted requirements for apprenticeships.

My MSc dissertation explored the perception of preparedness of newly qualified nurses working in an orthopaedic and trauma environment. My interests now lie in apprenticeships, including the experience of learners within an apprenticeship course through to becoming a newly qualified nurse and the challenges of moving between worker and learner.

I have held a range of external examining posts with HEI's across England and Wales. Currently I am the External Examiner for the End Point Assessment of the Nursing Associate Course at City University in London.
