The completion of the Mathematics Specialist Teacher (MaST) programme follows recent reports that highlighted the need for more primary teachers with specialist knowledge, particularly in maths.

The University is one of the first in the country to run the two year, part-time certificate which comprises of teachers undertaking a dedicated programme to deepen their subject knowledge of primary mathematics. As a result, the cohort will be among the first teachers in the country to have a MaST (Mathematics Specialist Teacher) title, recognised by the Department of Education.

Gina Donaldson, Senior Lecturer in Post Graduate Initial Teacher Education at Canterbury Christ Church University, said: “These specialist teachers show a deep understanding of mathematics and how young children learn the subject. We’re delighted to be leading the way with this programme which will add 70 specialist primary maths teachers to schools in the area helping to improve the standards of mathematics teaching across our region.”

Local authorities across Kent, Medway and Essex have collaborated with the University throughout the programme, whilst the project has also been recognised by the Government in their paper, The Importance of Teaching 2010, as a significant part in raising standards in primary mathematics.

The certificate also enables teachers to critically analyse the teaching and learning of mathematics whilst developing their skills of mentoring and coaching to work alongside their colleagues in order to improve the learning of all children in their schools.

The teachers were congratulated at a special event at the University this month and presented with their Post Graduate Certificate.
