26 April 2012

Second year sport science student, Phil Anthony, recorded an impressive time of 2 hours 16 minutes and 40 seconds in last Sunday's (22 April 2012) Virgin London Marathon.

Phil ranked as the first University student to cross the finish line and third British runner overall.

Competing in his first ever marathon, Phil’s fast time won him the British Universities Championships which awards the title to the highest-placed student in the race.

Attracting over 37,000 runners, the Virgin London marathon was his first attempt at the 26.2 mile distance. He finished twentieth in the whole race, just under 12 minutes behind the race winner from Kenya.

Dr Andy Balsdon, Director of Sport at Canterbury Christ Church University, said: “We are absolutely delighted for Phil, not only has he recorded such a fantastic time in a race watched by people from across the world, but he has also taken home the title as fastest student from across the UK.

“Phil successfully combines his training alongside his studies and we’re really pleased to hear that he puts that down to the support and facilities he utilises from the University, helping him assess his performance and go on to secure personal bests.”

Phil's five kilometre splits ranged between three minutes, 10 seconds and three minutes, 19 seconds, showing his consistent pace throughout an epic run.

Prior to the marathon, Phil Anthony commented: “Since I began running again a couple of years ago, it’s just been about enjoying it. Before I used to take it very seriously but now I’m taking a much more relaxed approach and I’m going to carry that into Sunday’s race.

“The University course has helped with my running because the lectures are based on how to improve your performance and also the sports science support I have received has been beneficial, including all the analysis and body-testing in the labs.”

As a regular runner from Ashford and a former triathlete, 30 year old Phil has one year left at Canterbury Christ Church University before he completes his degree.
