Students get insight into corporate and independent music industry
18 April 2012
Students from the popular music and popular culture module, part of the Media and Cultural Studies degree, were given a unique opportunity to hear first hand about the relationship between the Corporate and Independent music industry.
Earlier this month, Rich Walker, Head of Press for 4AD, an independent record label which is part of the largest group of labels in the world, visited the University to discuss how creativity, authenticity and marketing work together in the interest of both the musical artists and the independent company.
Dr Shane Blackman, Reader in Cultural Studies at the University, said: “The effect that industry speakers have on our students after they undertake a master class is astounding. The insight and real-life experience that the experts convey not only helps them understand the nature of the music industry but enlightens them to the opportunities and possibilities they can aspire to in their future careers.”
Part of the Beggars Group, 4AD is well known for introducing some of the world’s finest alternative talents, including an unlikely UK number one single in 1987 ‘Pump Up the Volume’ which arguable launched dance music into the mainstream.
The Popular Music and Popular Culture module takes an in-depth look at the production, distribution and consumption of Western popular music and examines the corporate and independent music scene.
Earlier this year, Paul Stokes Associate Editor at Q magazine also undertook a master class with students on this module. Read more about Paul’s visit and master class here: http://www.canterbury.ac.uk/News/newsRelease.asp?newsPk=1919
