20 May 2010

A member of staff from Canterbury Christ Church University has produced a series of maps for a major new publication on the historic development of Sandwich.

John Hills, who works as a technician in the Department of Geographical and Life Sciences at the University, created the maps for the book: Sandwich – the ‘completest medieval town in England’.

John said: “During my time at the University I have produced many maps for publication, but this project was especially enjoyable.

“As a lover of history I found the subject fascinating. The finished book is a really impressive body of work that I am proud to be associated with.”

The book, which explores the town and port from its origins to 1600, was supported by English Heritage, in association with the University, Dover District Council and Canterbury Archaeological Trust.

John is well known for his cartographic expertise, having also been the cartographer responsible for the bespoke maps in the Kent Archaeological Society publication: ‘Historical Atlas of Kent’.

Professor Peter Vujakovic, Head of Geographical and Life Sciences at the University said: “We are extremely proud to be associated with this new publication and in particular, of John’s contribution.

“It is a superb book, with expert discussion supported by high quality photography and illustrations.

“The origin and development of Sandwich is as much a matter of geography as history and John’s cartographic expertise brings to life these aspects of the development of a key Kentish settlement.”
