THANET CAMPUS NEWS RELEASE

On Friday 22nd March 2002 and Friday 26th April 2002 the Thanet Campus played host to GCSE Design and Technology students from Hartsdown Technology College. The students came to the Thanet Campus to develop webpages for the Hartsdown Technology College website site. The students brought with them text, photos and plans of the school. They then worked in teams assisted by David Leach, Digital Media Lecturer at the Thanet Campus and 2nd year diploma students: Lee Ellis and Tim Spurrier to construct a virtual tour of the school on the current website.

This joint project is part of a wider initiative to develop strong curriculum links between Higher Education and secondary schools in the Thanet area. The aim is to raise awareness of Higher Education amongst students through access to Thanet Campus academic and technology facilities. Curriculum links between Thanet schools and the Thanet Campus are already well established in Geography and Music. This is the first time the link has been extended to Information Technology, more specifically the planning, design and construction of a website.

The Project Director of these school links, Stuart Goodall commented:

‘This type of contact between school and Higher Education can benefit both parties. The students get access to first class technology and teaching. By taking part they also learn more about the opportunities available in Higher Education’.

Ends.
