Christ Church in top 20 universities for teaching staff qualifications

14 December 2016

National figures show that Canterbury Christ Church University is in the UK top 20 for teaching staff qualifications, showing its commitment to providing an excellent student experience.

The figures released by the Higher Education Funding Council (HEFCE) analyse three years of data. Christ Church is joint 20th, out of 130 higher education institutions, with 68% of its academic staff holding a teaching qualification in addition to their specific academic and professional qualifications.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rama Thirunamachandran, said: “The University is strongly committed to high teaching standards, which are so very important to an excellent student experience.

“Through our Academic Professional Development Framework, the University is able to offer our staff a wide range of opportunities to develop their skills and ensure that our students continue to experience a high-quality education.”

Following the 2012-13 higher education reforms, HEFCE was asked by the Government to support the publication of teaching qualifications, fellowships and expertise of academic staff at all levels within universities. This information is identified as important to existing and prospective students, and seen as an indicator of the institution’s commitment to teaching and learning.

Figures on teaching standards are of vital importance because of the new Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) which is being introduced by the Government in 2017. It will play a major part in determining funding levels and student recruitment.
