I qualified as a registered nurse in 1973 and have a varied career in general nursing, mental health nursing and teaching.  Although I have worked in both community and hospital settings the majority of my recent practice has been in teaching in hospital and higher education settings.  I do continue and active practice involvement outside of my role in the University.  I commenced my current role as Senior Lecturer in 1990 and now act as research co-ordinator for the Department, and represent the Faculty on several groups within the local healthcare Trusts and Hospitals including research and ethics groups.

I was given the opportunity to undertake a research project when a Community Psychiatric Nurse and, following the completion and publication, I have always sought to use and develop research activities in both practice and academic settings.  I have completed research in the information needs of patients using anti-embolic stockings, practice nursing, assessment of practice for nursing students, the needs of the elderly confused and the learning styles of nurses.  My own PhD is on the development of competence in new nurses.  I have a passion for research and now teach this to all levels of staff from Diploma to Doctoral level.  I am involved in supervising students through their Batchelor and Masters of Science Degrees and supervise students working towards their PhD.  My involvement in research in practice has led to service improvement and development.  It is my belief that research CAN and DOES make a difference to our practice.

Outside of the University I am on the database of the Royal College of Nursing as an expert witness and am called on to give opinions relating to nursing practice to the courts.
