I trained as a State Registered Nurse in Cambridge in the late 1970s. I chose to specialise in neurosurgical/neuromedical nursing in London and worked as a ward sister in this field. I originally entered nursing education as a Clinical Teacher and then became a Nurse Tutor in the mid 1980s. I have worked in a variety of Schools of Nursing and latterly higher education institutions. I joined this University in January 1998 after nine years working in Aberdeen.
My teaching is focussed on all aspects of interpersonal and teaching skills across both Pre and Post Registration programmes including palliative care, community nursing and mentorship. My areas of research interest relate to student attrition, retention and transition into University particularly in the context of widening participation. I am also very interested in Personal Development Planning and the role of the Personal Tutor.
